Hobbes and Lockes Legitimate Political Authority Essay

Hobbes and Lockes Legitimate Political Authority - Essay Example Similitudes and contrasts among Hobbes and Locke Both Hobbes and Locke concur that the legislature is a need. As repeated by Hobbes, individuals structure government for motivations behind self-safeguarding. In any general public, the making of government is frequently sustained by dread. Nonetheless, Hobbes is against restricted government and supports outright power since constrained government isn't adequate as far as protecting citizen’s right to self-conservation. Fundamentally, supreme force as tended to by Hobbes emerges when residents offer capacity to an individual or gathering of people. Subsequently, the sovereign has the command to, for example, take up arms, force burdens or proclaim harmony. Hobbes further accepts that setting up a legislature is essential turning to the condition of nature. Hobbes likewise keeps up that an administration assumes a job in saving citizen’s lives (Hobbes, 1994). Locke has confidence in a legislature that is set up by the individuals and works for the individuals. In any ca se, such an administration doesn't make supreme power as set by Hobbes. Locke likewise attests that the individuals reserve a privilege to change an administration that doesn't regard common laws and human rights. Then again, while Hobbes and Locke perceive the significance of having an administration, they vary on the measure of government and managing individually (Dunn, 1969). With respect to rights and correspondence, Hobbes has faith morally justified of self-conservation. He additionally emphasizes that men are equivalent as far as their physical and mental abilities.

Write In Essay Format A Reflective Case Study Based On A Movie Which I Write In Essay Format A Reflective Case Study Based On A Movie Which I Give You A List â€" Essay Example > [School/University]The identification of schizophrenia is very important in designing athe treatment process and medication of the mental disease. Mental and psychological disorders have been well understood in the modern world. Today, clinical identification of mental and psychological disorders can be easily done using clinical tools such as DSM-IV TR. However, such thing could not be said about those that have serious mental and psychological issues before the development of the clinical tools employed in modern times. In those times, there is no way for psychologists and clinical practitioners to determine the mental condition of individuals during the earlier periods and so such cases remained untreated until they become fully developed that treatment can no longer be applicable. This is the predicament experienced by John Nash in his life and as was depicted in A Beautiful Mind. SynopsisA Beautiful Mind is a biographical sketch of John Nash (played by Russell Crow), a mathem atical genius from West Virginia who won a Carnegie Prize in Mathematics and was considered as the most promising mathematician during the 1950s. Nash’s work on Game Theory was very impressive that it became one of the most important foundations in modern economics. He was also made prominent by his proofs on the most difficult mathematical problems of all time, making him very close in prominence to geniuses like Newton and James Clark Maxwell. However, his genius came with a price. John Nash was afflicted with paranoid schizophrenia which he endured for more than 30 years. The main foci of the film are the genius of John Nash and the price he has to pay for being one. The first part of the film showed how he achieved his moment of ‘enlightenment’ when he formulated his Group Dynamics Theory, a theory that prompts major revision of the existing economic theories during the period. The young genius, however, finds it hard to make positive social relationships. He is competit ive by nature and does not share a lot about himself to other students. These characteristics have aided the development of his mental instability. Moreover, his introvert behavior and his lack of proper social skills made it hard for anyone to notice that there is something wrong with his mental wiring. The closest semblance he has to a positive social relationship is with his roommate, Charles Hermann who is a literature student. The later parts of the movie showed his marriage to his student Alicia (played by Jennifer Connely) and his slow decent towards madness. He became an unwilling spy for Department of Defense (DOD) under Parcher for many years. As the years go by, solving and decoding secret algorithms around him became a norm. He was detached even though he has married, confined in his own mad world filled with people depending on him for salvation. Later, he figured that there are people wanting to capture and kill him for the information he provided Parcher. However, i t was established that he was actually mentally ill with what is now known as paranoid schizophrenia, one of the several types of schizophrenia where the person afflicted with the condition has an abnormal interpretation of reality. Because of his mental instability, Nash’s personal and professional life suffered tremendously. He lost his job and he almost lost his family to his delusions.

The Best Laid Plans of Mice and Men free essay sample

The work out west in the 1930s was tough. John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, focuses on two men: one—a mentally handicapped man, the other—his friend and caregiver, facing the hardships of life in that region. When disaster strikes, one of them must make the hardest decision they will ever face. This novel deals with many tender subjects that most would have a great deal of trouble talking about, but Steinbeck is able to break through that barrier and create a touching story. Steinbeck’s tone of pained recognition offers the sad reality that if one is different within the context of society’s standard, they are not accepted. Lennie Small, in contrast to his name, is a large, mentally handicapped man. His only friend and companion, George Milton, who is â€Å"small and quick†¦with restless eyes and sharp, strong features,† cares for and watches over him (Steinbeck 2). We will write a custom essay sample on The Best Laid Plans of Mice and Men or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page These two men travel together and find work where they can, and often must change locations because of the problems Lennie causes. Because of his disability, Lennie has a child’s characteristics of innocence and naivete. It is those characteristics which invariably lead him deep into trouble. Like a child who behaves according to his role in society, Lennie innocently parallels this same manner. But, unlike society’s acceptance of how a child fits into its contexts, Lennie, an adult, is rejected. The way he is treated by people who do not know him reflects this. When the boss of the farm first meets the two men, he wants to make sure that George is not playing him for a fool. The boss is suspicious that George could be trying to help Lennie obtain a job on the farm, only to take his pay from him at the end of the month. He does not stop to think that they are only two men searching for work: because of Lennie’s handicap, the boss never considers the possibility that George and Lennie are two men looking for honest work. It is the circumstances of Lennie’s handicap which cause the boss to always second-guess his motives; otherwise, anyone else looking for the same kind of job would never be as scrutinized. Saddled with his handicap, Lennie’s judgments prohibit him from responding to people and situations normally. When George continued to answer for Lennie while they both were being questioned by the boss, the boss finally became suspicious of Lennie’s silence and said to George, â€Å"‘†¦why don’t you let him answer? What you trying to put over? ’† (22). Problems also arise when Lennie does not pay attention to what is being said around him. When Curly threatens to fight Carlson, and Carlson laughs it off, Lennie still is smiling at the memory of the ranch. Curly believes Lennie was laughing at him, and decides to pick a fight with him. This leads to Curly’s fist being crushed in Lennie’s viselike grip. Of course, Lennie did not do this on purpose, but society would look at this as an act of violence that Lennie should not have committed, and should be punished for accordingly. When Lennie kills his pets, he usually responds by getting angry at them for dying. All he wants to do is pet them because they feel nice to him. So when they nip his fingers, he figures that he could pinch their heads, or shake them a little bit, and they would stop. Well, they do stop, but only because they are dead. This is the same type of incident that occurred with Curly’s wife. She told Lennie to feel her soft hair, and when she started yelling for him to let go, he thinks that he can shake her up a little bit to stop her. Lennie does not know how to handle most situations correctly, so his judgments are not the type that regular society would be okay with. This is why society does not allow him to fit in with ‘normal’ people. Steinbeck’s purpose in Of Mice and Men is that one must recognize how society treats people who are not the same as everyone else. Society as a whole always looked down upon people who did not meet the ‘standard,’ and still continues to do so to this day, though not as much as before. Society needs to fix the way ‘different’ people are treated, and end the inequality and unfairness. If someone is different, does that mean that they should be given different treatment? It all starts with one person’s decisions on how they believe they should treat someone else.

Christianity Essays (2379 words) - Family Law, Divorce,

Christianity Religious Studies a) Describe and explain the Christian teaching about marriage (be sure to include Biblical evidence). (24) b) Choose two different Christian denominations and explain how they apply this teaching to the issue of divorce and remarriage today. (21) c) Divorce and remarriage can never be justified. Give reasons to agree and disagree with this statement, using evidence from Christian teachings and practice. What is your opinion? Give reasons when you explain it. (15) a) Describe and explain the Christian teaching about marriage (be sure to include Biblical evidence). (24) There are many reasons as to why a couple wishes to be married, these may include: ? A baby is on the way and they want the child to have married parents ? The couple will be better off financially, as the man gets a married, mans tax allowance. ? It is less confusing if the couple have the same surname. ? The couple wants to show their love for each other by having a wedding ceremony. ? It gives both parties security under the law. The fundamental basis for Christian teaching on marriage is that God created man and woman for each other and it is in the Old Testament that we are first introduced to this concept. The Old Testament writers believed that married love was part of Gods purpose in creating people. It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.(Genesis 2:18) It also clearly states in the Old Testament that marriage was so important, that adultery was a crime fit only for the severest punishment. You shall not commit adultery. (Deut.5: 18) If a man commits adultery with another mans wife with the wife of his neighbour - both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death. (Lev. 20:10) The teachings of St Paul and the teaching of Jesus are recognised in the New Testament. St Paul and Jesus did not change the laws and stories, but simply built on them in their own teaching. Jesus and St Paul taught that marriage is for life until one of the partner dies. Jesus, being an orthodox Jew accepted that divorce took place, but according to biblical interpretation was probably unhappy with the position that Jewish woman was left after divorce. Moses gave permission for a man to write a divorce notice and send his wife away. Marriage has three purposes: the good of the couple (it enables then to have a life-long relationship of love) and the procreation of children and their education. The union of husband and wife is designed not only as a way of expressing their love for each other, but so their love can give new life. These purposes are outlined in the wedding service. Two people vow to love and cherish, for better for worse, in sickness and in health, till death do us part. The priest asks for God to protect the couple and help them through their marriage so they can remain faithful to each other. Marriage is a commitment and given by God as a means for a man and woman to find happiness together. In marriage, a man and woman are called to help each other to live out a life of love: in sharing the good times, and the bad. By their mutual self-giving love they help each other to come to know, understand and live the real meaning of love. Their love helps them to become truly and fully alive. The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptised persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament. (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1601) At the wedding, the bride wears a white dress. This is a tradition that the bride would be a virgin on her wedding day. Once they are married and have sexual intercourse, they become one flesh (Ephesians 5:21 33) and only God can end this bond. They are no longer two, but one. A man will leave his father and mother and unite with his wife, and the two

Japanese American History Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Japanese American History - Essay Example Having taken the usual sciences as its standard in terms of create valid, generalizable and prognostic hypothesis, modern sociology is frequently critiqued for its incapability to produce such hypothesis in relation to the social globe. No doubt, this research is fraught at the start. Social science cannot create this type of hypothetical knowledge and neither be supposed to it effort to as the individual world is far too multifaceted and our sympathetic of it is always context reliant. What is necessary, he goes on to argue, is not a turn towards post positivist or postmodernist reductionism, but a latest way of conceptualizing social science so that it can get back its position as a sensible, thinker action. Furthermore, this topic of Japanese Americans and World War II is obviously the most written regarding episode in Asian American narration and perhaps is the mainly recognized past event of meaning to Asian Americans between modern Americans. That reminiscence is perpetuated, in both books and the public dialogue, in immense part by those who, like Myers, emphasize the past to safe the future. Japanese American To these split ends, a spatial explanation of the Japanese American imprisonment story must generate newest signs, factually, new road signs directly the entire Americans to those unremembered facial appearance of the Southwestern scenery. Those narratives necessitate generating novel chart modalities to meet head-on those available landmarks from side to side which social agendas are required, identities are openness, and precise desires are elicited. At an essential level, these narratives have to forward the tourist's sight. As things place now, tourists often decrease the countryside of the Southwest to something inspiring, religious, or beneficial, all founded on images of sun, desert, blue skies, dramatic gorge lands and mesas, cacti and coyotes, adobe structural design, living Indians, and extra symbols of a unlike civilization. But in addition such bearers of attitude and civilization, the landscape of Southwest are supposed to also be evocative tourists and others of that ap palling Thing, the custody. Internment Activities From the amount of novel literature faithful to the internment, we might believe this facing up to the appalling Thing is charming place. Certainly, there is a rapidly rising body of writing concerning this Japanese American knowledge. For instance, the main collection of Japanese American internment narratives, It exemplify on a diversity of voices of internment; on internees diaries, letters, stories, poems, and biographies; and on information accounts as well as authorized government declarations. In adding up, there have been recurrent sequential studies of and orientation guides to the Japanese American wartime information. These include the Encyclopedia of Japanese American History, Japanese American Internment all through World conflict II. Additional, in the preceding decade, we have seen more than a few more individual accounts of the internment camps, and the list is still increasing. Historical Background At the beginning of 1941, Japanese expansion in the pacific was countered by the USA. Japans profession of northern Indo-China provoked the USA to oblige restriction on Japan; which was hold up by the British and Dutch. The USA ended its trade agreement by means of Japan and decided additional loans to China. A whole halt to all petroleum products by the USA, the British and the Dutch aggravated a main disaster and a argument. Marketing and Marketing Strategy - Essay Example solely based on the need for a car, and when people believe it would be cheaper and more convenient to use a car rather than the public transportation. One factor that might lead the customers to buy an electric car is the fact that these cars emit low pollutants due to the electric engines. Also, people who are environmental friendly, with an urge to buy an economical car will be more inclined towards the electric cars. Other factors that might lead to people choosing the electric cars include the compactness of the car, economical use of energy, continuous increase in fuel prices across the world and also increase in the maintenance prices. Photography is an art

Photography is an art Photography is an art that took many years and efforts of many individuals to perfect. Many different people in many different fields contributed to this light writing. Chemists, artists, inventors, and engineers all lending a crafting hand to the art. Photography can be defined as the art of producing images of objects on photosensitive surfaces. It is both an art and a science. As an art it expresses personal vision, and as a science it relies on technology. The word photography came from the Greek word phos, meaning light and graphos, meaning writing, which literally means light writing. Light writing is an emerging form of stop motion animation wherein still images, captured using the technique known as light painting or light drawing, are put in sequence thereby creating the optical illusion of movement for the viewer. In order to get started in creating light writing you will need a DSLR( Digital Single Lens Reflex ) camera, an ordinary DSC( Digital Still Camera ) will not do b ecause light writing requires a camera that can be placed in the B bulb shutter position, a remote shutter release and a tripod. All you need to get started is your camera and an understanding of how to control shutter speed. Light writing demands longer exposures of anywhere from several seconds to many minutes. Another technique is to use the multiple exposure features on a camera and shoot a series of 30 seconds to many minutes. A tripod will help you compose the shot and keep the camera still, and one or more lights will add to the fun. Light writing photography is a form of stop motion animation which requires the user to find a place, set the camera, and to take the picture. To create light writing, you or a friend will stand in front of the camera with a light in a dark room or place. The place should be dark otherwise the essence of light writing is useless. It is your choice on whether to bring a friend or not because the purpose on bringing a friend is to hold the camera for you, but if you have a tripod you can do it by yourself. In order to set the camera into its rightful position you need to find a place where in the camera will not move, the best places are on a still table, chair or anything that is stable, but to get the best results you need to place the camera on a tripod. After which you need to adjust the setting, the exposure should be around 10-30 seconds or longer depending on the design you want to portray. Set the camera to about ISO 100, and close your aperture as much as possible. This prevents over exposure. If there is still too much light, you might have to use a filter for better results. In order to take the picture you need to find a source of light. Finding a source of light is easy, just about any light will work, but the best tolls have tight focused light that lets you create precise patterns. LED flashlights are among the best for light writing, for they are compact, super bright and come in all sorts of fun colors. Glow sticks are also perfect for light writing images. Before moving and waving the light you need to count off to your partner so that he/she will click on the capture button in the exact time you wave your light, but if you are using a tripod you will need to count off by yourself according to how many seconds you placed on the timer. Once the capture button is clicked begin moving or waving the light to draw shapes and patterns in the air. If you move too quickly enough, the camera will not record a person, only the patterns of light you leave behind. The camera may also record the background if it is spotlighted by other light sources, such as t he moon or a streetlight. I challenge everyone who is interested in light writing photography to create masterpieces in light, to go beyond the expected to create more designs or ideas, to keep on practicing until the perfect design is reached, and to share their knowledge to the people around them to continue the art of light writing. Now, after reading my essay, would you too be interested in light writing photography, to share and to have fun with the picture you make with your friends and family? I recommend people who take photography or to those who are interested in art to take light writing photography to the next level, to improve their skills and share it to other people so that the next generation will already have an idea on how light writing works and to continue the art of light writing.

Reversals in “Ethan Frome” by Edith Wharton Essay

In Edith Wharton’s novel Ethan Frome, the lives of the characters are turned upside down but not in a sense that they are able to escape from the state are in. It’s more like the physical wellness of the characters and their social place within their microcosm is the one that is reversed rather than them, having totally opposite lives. Not much changes, except that Zeena’s health improves dramatically and Mattie becomes the one who needs medical attention. Ethan on the other hand is still with his wife, miserable and poor. Ethan Frome, as the title suggests is the story about Ethan, a farmer who has to attend to his sickly wife, Zeena. The couple is helped by Mattie, Zeena’s cousin. Ethan is intensely attracted to Mattie but he is duty bound to serve his wife. Zeena is suspicious for Mattie has been living with them for over a year and she has sensed the mutual attraction that Ethan and Mattie have. In defiance to the betrayal going on in her house, Zeena hires a different helper. Ethan of course, objects but in the end, he still obeys his wife. Before Mattie is able to leave town for good, she suggests that they commit suicide by sleighing directly on the path of an elm tree. Unfortunately for them, the â€Å"smash-up† doesn’t prove to be fatal because of Ethan’s hesitation before the impact. The failed suicide attempt causes Mattie to be paralyzed and Ethan almost suffering the same fate. Before the smash-up, Ethan was already in a position that is very similar to where he is at the end of the novel. If anything, he’s even in a poorer state than where he was before. As described by the condition of the house, â€Å"Even for that part of the country the kitchen was a poor-looking place† (Wharton, 1911, p. 63). It means that the reversal that happened to Ethan, isn’t exactly a reversal. He comes full circle, after having high hopes and dreams for a new life with Mattie, he ends up where he started, in that poor house with his wife. The reversal (and return trip) that would happen to Ethan is foreshadowed in Chapter IV; Ethan passes by a graveyard where his ancestors are buried. He sees on the epitaph his name, â€Å"Sacred to the memory of Ethan Frome and Endurance his wife, who dwelled together in peace for fifty years† (Wharton, 1911, p.27). Ethan wonders whether the same words would be place on his Epitaph. The real reversals that happen in the story are with Zeena and Matie. These two cousins would change roles by the end of the novel. Before the smash-up, Zeena was the sickly person that is being tended to by her husband and her cousin Mattie. But in the span of twenty years or so, Zeena would recover from her illness and she would end up to be the one who â€Å"takes care† of Mattie, or at least let her live in the house. Mattie would end up paralyzed after their mishap, or failed suicide attempt about twenty years ago. Now she is the one who needs to be taken care of. Before the smash-up Mattie was a perfectly healthy and beautiful woman, Ethan is not the only one who had eyes for her as evidenced by Eady’s invitations toward her during the opening chapters of the novel. But after the smash-up, she is reduced to be nothing more than a body on an armchair, unable to move with the freedom that she had in the past â€Å"Under her shapeless dress her body kept its limp immobility† (Wharton, 1911, p. 63). The smash-up had caused reversals in the novel, Ethan’s hopes of being with Mattie for the last time is crushed along with Mattie’s spine. Mattie who used to be a healthy and beautiful woman becomes a motionless body. Zeena on the other hand, before the smash-up was a sickly person, but twenty years after the incident, she is revealed to have recovered from her illness. Reference Wharton, E. (1911). Ethan Frome.
